We asked Tim Bolton, Vice-Principal Academic of Plymouth College of Art and one of our selectors, to choose 5 favourites from the Craft Festival. I hope you enjoy his choices…
Andy Poplar has been making these found and altered everyday glass objects for the last three years. He is constantly inventive, etching funny, clever and poignant words and phrases into the surface of familiar glass objects. Every time I see one of his pieces they make me smile and laugh.
I have been watching Tracey’s work since she was a student. Her bold use of colour and delightful simple forms has developed a range of really striking and wearable pieces of jewellery. It will be exciting to see how her work has developed over the last year.
I haven’t seen Lisa’s work in the flesh yet but from the photographs the beautiful simple illustrative drawings, the colour palette, the use of metallic lustres and the works reference to familiar historical china decoration, creates a very fresh take on English and Chinese ceramic traditions.
These ghostly everyday images of washing lines and bicycles, Gardens and allotments, camping and fishing trips, appear frozen in time in these beautifully made sandcast glass pieces. looking at them I am always struck by how they appear to be snatched moments of much larger stories.
I haven’t had the chance to handle or see these pieces yet but the monochromatic pallet, the simple forms and the use of whittled holly for handles in this range of cutlery, appear to have created very attractive natural objects that I can imagine would be an absolute pleasure to use everyday.
