The Great Made by Hand Knit In
New this year is the Great Made by Hand Knit In – a complimentary event, hosted by the Cambrian Mountain Wool, which celebrates Welsh wool and traditional knitting techniques. You can bring your own knitting and chat with fellow knitters or you can join in the giant knitting session to help knit the scales (and more) for the Dragon that will feature on Cambrian Mountains Wool's huge Welsh Flag, to celebrate Wool from Wales.
Made by Hand will also be the host venue for the 2015 International Design and Make Challenge, presented by Cambrian Mountain Wool. The challenge gave designers the opportunity to work with 100% Cambrian Mountain wool from the heart of Wales. 128 designers submitted their designs and the 35 designers accepted the challenge. An exhibition, workshops and demonstrations on the versatility of wool will be on display at Made by Hand.
Children’s Craft Area
There will be drop in workshops in the popular children’s craft area at Made by Hand, presented in partnership with Llantarnam Grange Arts Centre and Cardiff’s Kings Monkton School. Kings Monkton and artist Joanne Roe from Craft at Heart will be using a new material, Powertex to create sculptures with young visitors.
Paul Norton, Principal of Kings Monkton School said:
“We really wanted to work with Made by Hand. Crafts make us feel rooted, give us a sense of belonging and connect us with our history. Kings Monkton School feels it is really important for our children to understand that our ancestors used to create these crafts out of necessity, and now we do them for fun, and to express ourselves. It helps us understand our different heritages, cultures and experiences”.
Llantarnam Grange Arts Centre will be running drop in children’s workshops inspired by the work of Welsh paper and stitch artist, Becky Adams. Becky Adams, from Penarth will also be running book-able workshops for adults over the weekend.
Workshops and Demonstrations
The event welcomes children and adults of all ages to come along and try their hand at a wide range of exciting craft workshops, watch a number of different craft demonstrations and masterclasses by some of the UK’s most prestigious makers, including Pembrokeshire based ceramics artist, Ashraf Hanna (pictured).
Food & Music
The Made by Hand Café will also be back, this year presented by the multi award-winning Pembrokeshire Beachfood Company. The Café provides the perfect opportunity to rest and refuel during each day, expect very high quality, ethically sourced produce served with style. There will also be plenty of live music from Music Central for shoppers to enjoy over the three days.
