Nielanell

Textiles

"I founded Nielanell, my contemporary Shetland knitwear label, in 2008. My designs are inspired by the traditions and renowned quality of Shetland knitwear, but I follow my own design path. Rather than tracking trends, I’m known for an artistic approach: often beginning with a concept, sometimes relating to my multicultural heritage, rather than a visual source. For me, the pinnacle of making is in the wearing—and the relationship the wearer forms with knitwear. Manufacture is important, too: yarn is sourced from the best Scottish and Italian mills; we are so proud that our collections are made by local Shetland craftspeople. Production is sustainable, with each piece made individually in short runs. Some garments are available in an ever-changing kaleidoscope of colours. My work has been shown at Collect, and Decorex; in 2018 I was a design leader on a national programme for young people at V&A Dundee".
