Katie Honnor of madebyhandonlinecom chooses her 5 Favourites from The Festival
Written: 27 March 2017
The Craft Festival is my favourite event of the year and choosing just five favourite exhibitors from this year’s list has been very difficult!
There are so many different skills and techniques involved in Ann’s work and I can’t wait to see it close up. Ann uses found objects with silver and copper, making playful combinations of materials to create utensils. The metal is worked in different ways to add texture and colour and I especially love the colours and patterns in her enamelled spoons.
I’m looking forward to seeing so many of the jewellers exhibiting this year and my taste is quite varied. I really like the look of Carol Hunt’s oxidized silver and gold necklaces. The strength of the dark lines and the lightness of the delicate gold is brought together so effectively in this linear design.
Doug Fitch and Hannah McAndrew are long established potters, well known separately for their beautiful hand thrown earthenware inspired by medieval English pottery. Now they’ve come together professionally and as partners, creating wood fired collaborative work using traditional techniques of slip trailing and sgraffito. I’m really looking forward to seeing them demonstrating together at the Festival this year.
The wonderfully fluid forms of Jane Crisp’s steam bent ash trugs are simply beautiful! I love the way they have such a simple and humble function, whilst also being so sculptural. Jane uses copper fixings and is also experimenting with adding bands of hammered brass.
I live on the edge of Dartmoor and have always been drawn to Dionne’s landscapes and lampshades inspired by her very similar views of the Yorkshire Moors. I love her combination of paint, screen print and expressive stitch, capturing the freedom and beauty of the vast, dramatic skies and blocks of moorland colours. Dionne is going to be demonstrating at the Festival alongside another favourite, ceramicist Tone von Krogh (sorry, I seem to have snuck in a 6th!).
