7 Days until Craft Festival and Katherine Sorrell chooses her 5 Festival Favourites and We Look at Out of the Woods
Written: 31 December 1999
Katherine Sorrell, freelance writer has chosen her Five Festival Favourites. We also take a look at Out of the Woods.
Rebecca Proctor – Modern Craft Workshop
These wonderfully useable pieces combine a minimal Japanese aesthetic with a sense of traditional, robust English pottery. Very desirable!
Like so many Cornish makers, Mirri is inspired by what she sees when walking the coast. The results are sophisticated, pretty, unusual and a little bit irresistible.
Helen’s screen-printed linens are all made by hand in her Cornish studio. They’re beautifully designed and executed, and eco-certified, too. Just wonderful.
Art meets textiles in Elizabeth’s work, which is ever-so-slightly bonkers but utterly compelling. She calls it ‘magic realism in fabric’, and there’s definitely a sense of other-worldliness in her beautifully made pieces.
Sarah’s work is fabulous – I especially like her chunky statement necklaces made from foraged beach plastic. She’s all about sustainability, too, and for other pieces uses eco silver and gold, and recycled old jewellery.
Katherine Sorrell is working on a new book, Make: Cornwall, featuring 25 inspirational contemporary craftspeople. You can pre-order a copy, and buy some gorgeous craft items, including jewellery, cushions, wooden toys, paints and even workshops, on Crowdfunder until 25th June. For more details CLICK HERE
Out of the Woods
We know we shouldn't congratulate ourselves too much, but we think Out of the Woods in GREAT! And we're so pleased that it's coming back this year.
Join Hilary Burns and Friends to celebrate our woodlands, skilled wood workers and basket makers at The Craft Festival. Hilary Burns, who was recently awarded the Heritage Craft Association's Maker of the Year award, is a highly acclaimed willow artist, basket maker and willow expert. She will be joined by basket makers Andrew Kirby, Richard Lewis, Josey Goodin, spoon carver Felix Kary & sculptor Artisan Willow.
Andrew Kirby will be inviting visitors to pound a fresh, large ash log to separate the growth ring layers. This is commonly done for basketry in the US but is relatively unknown in the UK.
